A slender coral island linked to the mainland by a long causeway, the Island of Mozambique was the Portuguese capital of East Africa for centuries. Its northern Stone Town of grand faded mansions and churches gives way to the reed-and-thatch Makuti Town, together telling a story of Indian Ocean trade, faith and empire. It remains hauntingly atmospheric.
