Lijiang is a canal town in the clouds — a UNESCO old town of cobbled lanes, wooden houses and rushing streams in the highlands of Yunnan, heartland of the Naxi people, watched over by the glaciers of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Lijiang sits at around 2,400 metres in the northwest highlands of Yunnan province, southwestern China, at the edge of the Tibetan plateau. Its Old Town (Dayan), a UNESCO site, is a remarkable maze of cobbled lanes and canals — meltwater channels running through the streets, crossed by little stone bridges, among grey-roofed wooden houses — built by the Naxi, an ethnic minority with their own language, pictographic script and music. The old town huddles below the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a glacier-capped massif that dominates the skyline. Beautiful and atmospheric, though heavily commercialised and touristy, Lijiang is the gateway to Yunnan's spectacular northwest — Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La and the Naxi villages.

The canal old town — Lijiang's magic is its Old Town — an intricate maze of cobbled lanes and clear meltwater canals, running down from the Black Dragon Pool through the streets, crossed by hundreds of little stone bridges, among grey-tiled wooden Naxi houses hung with red lanterns. Wander with no plan (it's genuinely maze-like), follow the water, climb Lion Hill to the Wangu Pavilion for the view over the roofs, and see the Mu Palace, the old Naxi chieftains' residence. It's touristy and busy — go early or late for the quiet — but undeniably beautiful. **Naxi culture** — Lijiang is the heartland of the Naxi people, and their culture is a highlight — the ancient Dongba pictographic script (the world's only living pictographic writing), the haunting Naxi Orchestra that performs centuries-old Taoist court music on antique instruments, and the traditions, dress and matrilineal-influenced society of the nearby Mosuo. Visit the Dongba cultural museum by the Black Dragon Pool, catch a Naxi music concert, and you touch a distinctive, deep culture quite unlike Han China. It gives Lijiang its soul beneath the tourism. **The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain** — Dominating the skyline north of the town is the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan), a glacier-capped massif of thirteen peaks, sacred to the Naxi and stunning to behold — its reflection in the Black Dragon Pool is the classic Lijiang image. You can ride cable cars up toward the glacier and the high meadows (take the altitude seriously — it's very high), see the spectacular open-air "Impression Lijiang" show at its foot, and hike the surrounding valleys. The mountain is the essential day trip and the town's magnificent backdrop. **Yunnan food and the wider northwest** — Lijiang eats Yunnan-and-Naxi — the chewy Naxi baba flatbread, Yunnan's famous "crossing-the-bridge" rice noodles, chicken and mushroom hotpots (Yunnan is a wild-mushroom paradise), cured ham, yak dishes from the plateau edge, and Pu'er tea. The old-town restaurants and the villages serve it. And Lijiang is the gateway to the wonders of northwest Yunnan — the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Tibetan town of Shangri-La, and the Naxi villages — some of the most spectacular country in China. Lijiang eats Yunnan-and-Naxi highland food. The local staple is the Naxi baba (a chewy, layered wheat flatbread, sweet or savoury); Yunnan brings its famous "crossing-the-bridge" rice noodles (guoqiao mixian), chicken and wild-mushroom hotpots (Yunnan is a mushroom paradise), cured Xuanwei ham, and, near the plateau, yak dishes. Pu'er tea (from Yunnan) and local rice wine accompany. Eat in the old-town restaurants and the villages, and try the Naxi baba and a mushroom hotpot.
Vegetarians can eat well on Yunnan's mushroom and vegetable dishes, tofu, noodles and the vegetable baba, though meat and stock are common — ask (the Chinese "su" means vegetarian). Vegan is workable with care. Halal food is found (there's a Hui Muslim presence); kosher is unavailable. Gluten-free is hard around the wheat baba, noodles and soy sauce — rice dishes help, but confirm. Note the altitude (~2,400 m and much higher on the mountain) — acclimatise and hydrate.
Stay in the Old Town (Dayan) in a courtyard guesthouse (kezhan) in a traditional Naxi house — atmospheric, though the central lanes can be noisy with bars at night; the quieter edges or nearby Shuhe are calmer. It's a very affordable, walkable town, and a base for the mountain and the highlands. Book ahead for Chinese holidays, when it's packed. The old town is the characterful base; Shuhe the quieter one.

The Old Town is a maze, best explored on foot (and cars can't enter much of it). Taxis, buses and ride-hailing (Didi) cover the wider town and the mountain and villages; a tour or driver helps for the Jade Dragon mountain and the northwest. Set up mobile payments for transport.
