Rising from an island where the Volga meets the Sviyaga, Sviyazhsk was built as a fortified base by Ivan the Terrible for his conquest of Kazan. Its Assumption Cathedral holds a rare and precious cycle of 16th-century frescoes, and the whitewashed monastery and churches make it a serene, self-contained relic of old Russia set adrift on the water.
