About Tauric Chersonese and its Chora

Founded by Greek colonists over 2,000 years ago near modern Sevastopol, Chersonese was a thriving city-state whose stone streets, basilicas and theatre now stand beside the Black Sea. Remarkably, its ancient agricultural hinterland — the 'chora', divided into regular plots — is still visible, offering a rare picture of how a classical city fed itself.
