See the Hanshin Tigers play at historic Koshien Stadium near Osaka. Summer home games, jet balloons and Japan's loudest fans in the Kansai heartland.
Few sporting experiences in Japan match a Hanshin Tigers home game at Koshien Stadium. Opened in 1924 and ringed by its famous ivy-clad walls, the ballpark in Nishinomiya — between Osaka and Kobe in the Kansai region — is the spiritual home of the country's most devoted fan base. Tigers supporters are known nationwide for their fervour, and a summer evening in the stands, with organised chants for every batter and a sky full of balloons after the seventh inning, is as much a cultural event as a baseball match.
## What to expect
The atmosphere is the draw. Each Tigers player has his own call-and-response cheer song, led by the oendan cheer squads and sung by the whole stadium; the traditional launch of thousands of jet balloons during the seventh-inning stretch is a spectacle in itself. Food and drink culture is a big part of the day, from stadium bento and kushikatsu to beer poured by roving vendors. The right-field Alps seats put you in the middle of the visiting-team support, while the home-side stands roar loudest for the Tigers.
Summer home fixtures run through the season, and Koshien games sell out fast — tickets for the busiest months often go months in advance, so book early through official channels; a special foreign-visitor ticket is offered via authorised partners. The stadium is a short walk from Koshien Station on the Hanshin Main Line, around 20 to 25 minutes from central Osaka.
