▸ About this event

A gloriously over-the-top Tokyo dinner show of neon, drums, robots and samurai battles in the heart of Shinjuku's Kabukicho.

Successor to Kabukicho's legendary Robot Restaurant, the Samurai Restaurant show is Tokyo at its most unapologetically bonkers: a sensory blowout of LED costumes, taiko drumming, dancing, mascots and mock samurai combat crammed into a basement theatre in Shinjuku's neon nightlife district. It is pure spectacle rather than high culture, and that is exactly the point.

Over a fast-paced set you are swept from one absurd, glittering scene to the next, with performers parading through the audience, giant props rolling past your knees and light and sound turned up to eleven. Many packages include a bento-style meal or snacks and drinks, though most people come for the show more than the food. It is loud, silly, family-friendly fun and a very Tokyo way to spend an evening.

Tips for your visit

Book online in advance, as popular slots sell out and walk-up space is limited. Choose an earlier session if you have children, and arrive 20-30 minutes ahead to find the venue among Kabukicho's busy lanes. Seats are often close-packed and side rows can have partial views, so aim for central. The strobe-heavy, high-volume show can overwhelm sensitive viewers, so bring ear protection for young kids.

How to get there

Fly into Haneda Airport (HND), about 30-45 minutes from Shinjuku by train or monorail plus a change, or Narita (NRT), around 90 minutes via the Narita Express or bus. The show sits in Kabukicho, a 5-7 minute walk from Shinjuku Station, the world's busiest, served by JR, Odakyu, Keio and multiple metro lines. Seibu-Shinjuku and Shinjuku-sanchome (Marunouchi/Fukutoshin) stations are even closer. Head for the northeast exits toward Kabukicho; the streets are dense and neon-lit, so follow signage and your map for the final few blocks.
