▸ About this event

Ethiopia's spectacular Orthodox Epiphany, celebrated with processions and mass baptismal rites at Gondar's royal baths.

Timkat is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany, commemorating Christ's baptism. Gondar hosts the country's most renowned festivities, centred on the 17th-century Fasilides' Bath. Preparations known as Ketera begin January 18, with the main day on January 19, 2027, continuing into January 20. Replicas of the Ark of the Covenant, called tabots, are carried in colourful processions, and at dawn crowds gather for a blessing and mass immersion in the pool. Timkat is UNESCO-listed intangible heritage.

How to get there

Timkat's most spectacular celebrations unfold in Gondar, northern Ethiopia, around the pools of Fasilides' Bath. The nearest airport is Gondar Airport (GDQ), a short drive south of the city with domestic connections from Addis Ababa Bole International (ADD). Most travellers fly Addis to Gondar in about an hour, then take a taxi or hotel transfer the roughly 20 minutes into town. Gondar has no metro or rail; getting between the castle compound and Fasilides' Bath is easy on foot or by short taxi hop, though streets fill with processions during the festival, so allow extra time and expect road closures on the main ceremonial routes.
