▸ About this event

Mozart and Strauss played by the Schonbrunn Palace Orchestra in a Habsburg imperial hall, with opera singers and ballet dancers.

A concert by the Schonbrunn Palace Orchestra brings Vienna's musical heritage to life inside one of the Habsburgs' imperial residences. Held in the palace's elegant Orangery, where Mozart himself is said to have performed, the programme celebrates the two composers most tied to the city: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss. Expect beloved overtures, arias, waltzes and polkas performed by a chamber orchestra in period-style dress, accompanied by opera singers and ballet dancers.

The atmosphere is unashamedly romantic. The long, chandelier-lit Orangery hall, the swirl of a Strauss waltz and the palace gardens outside combine into a quintessentially Viennese evening. Selections are drawn from crowd favourites, from 'Eine kleine Nachtmusik' to 'The Blue Danube' and popular arias, making it accessible even if you are new to classical music.

Good to know

Concerts run year-round, most evenings, with several ticket categories as well as dinner-and-concert packages; book ahead in summer and around the festive season. Higher categories place you closer to the orchestra, but the hall is intimate enough that most seats enjoy a good view. Arrive early to explore the palace grounds and to find the Orangery entrance, which is separate from the daytime palace tour route. Dress is smart-casual, and you will not feel out of place in something a little more formal. Afterward, Schonbrunn's U4 metro connection makes the trip back into the centre quick and easy.
