<p>Verdi's Aida was practically made for the open air, and seeing it staged against Rome's ancient monuments during the Opera di Roma summer season is one of Italy's great cultural nights out. Warm evening air, floodlit antiquity and a full orchestra and chorus combine for spectacle on a scale no indoor house can match.</p><p>Aida is grand opera at its grandest: a tale of love and duty set in ancient Egypt, famous for its Triumphal March, sweeping choruses and soaring arias. Under the stars, the ruins themselves become part of the scenery, and huge processional scenes unfold across a broad stage as the sun's last glow fades. Even non-opera-goers tend to be swept up by the sheer theatre of it, the massed voices rolling out into the Roman night.</p><h3>Tips for your visit</h3><p>Book ahead, as premium and central seats for summer performances sell out fast. Bring a light layer for cooler night air and a cushion if you can, since open-air seating can be firm. Arrive early to find your section and settle before dusk, and consider a compact pair of binoculars for distant stage detail. Performances run long, so eat beforehand and check the start time carefully.</p>

Fly into Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), about 30 km southwest; the Leonardo Express runs to Roma Termini in around 32 minutes. Ciampino (CIA) is the budget alternative to the southeast. From Termini, Metro Line B reaches Circo Massimo station in a few stops, right by the ancient chariot ground. The venue is a short, level walk from the metro exit. On performance nights the area is busy, so use the metro rather than driving, and allow extra time to reach your seat before the show begins at dusk.
