▸ About this event

Sufi whirling dervishes spin into meditative trance inside a restored Ottoman bathhouse, a mesmerising ritual turned evening spectacle in Istanbul.

The Sema ceremony of the Mevlevi order, better known as the whirling dervishes, is one of Turkey's most hypnotic living traditions, recognised by UNESCO. At Hodjapasha, near Sirkeci, it unfolds inside a beautifully converted 550-year-old Ottoman hammam, a domed stone hall whose round floor is perfectly suited to the ritual's slow, spinning geometry.

This is worship, not cabaret, and it is stirring to witness. Robed dervishes shed black cloaks to reveal white gowns symbolising rebirth, then rotate steadily with one palm turned to the heavens and one to the earth, receiving grace and passing it on. Reed flute, drum and chant build the meditative soundscape as the figures blur into white cones under soft light. The atmosphere is quiet, reverent and genuinely transporting.

Tips for your visit

Book ahead, as the intimate hall fills quickly in summer. Treat the Sema as a spiritual ceremony rather than a show: no talking, no flash, and photography is usually limited to the final moments only, so follow staff guidance. Arrive 20-30 minutes early to be seated and settled. Sessions run around an hour, so it pairs well with an early dinner in the nearby Sirkeci or Sultanahmet streets afterward.

▸ Getting there

How to get there

Fly into Istanbul Airport (IST), about 40 km northwest on the European side; the M11 metro plus a line change, or the Havaist bus, reaches the old city in roughly an hour. Hodjapasha sits in Sirkeci, a short walk from Sirkeci station and the Gülhane and Sirkeci stops on the T1 tram line, which links Sultanahmet, Eminönü and the Galata bridge. From Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side, allow longer via bus or metro. The venue is deep in pedestrianised old-town lanes, so the T1 tram beats a taxi through heavy traffic.
