Thailand's New Year water festival, when Bangkok's streets erupt into the world's biggest water fight.
Songkran is the Thai New Year, celebrated nationwide from April 13-15, 2027. Rooted in Buddhist merit-making and the ceremonial washing of Buddha images, it has grown into an exuberant public water fight. In Bangkok, Silom Road and Khao San Road become the main splash zones, alongside music events and temple visits. Families also pour water over elders' hands as a sign of respect. Expect crowds, heat and city-wide festivities.

How to get there
Most visitors arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK); the older Don Mueang Airport (DMK) handles many budget carriers. From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 30 minutes, where you connect to the BTS Skytrain. Songkran's biggest water battles cluster around Silom (BTS Sala Daeng) and Khao San Road (nearest is Phra Athit pier or a taxi from Ratchathewi). The BTS and MRT are the fastest way to dodge traffic during the holiday. Expect to get soaked on public transport too, so seal your phone in a waterproof pouch.
