A live flamenco performance inside Barcelona's Palau de la Música Catalana, a jaw-dropping Modernista concert hall dripping with stained glass.

Flamenco in Barcelona hits differently when the stage is the Palau de la Música Catalana, Antoni Gaudí-era architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner's UNESCO-listed masterpiece. You come for the raw art form, the stamping heels, the wailing cante and the guitarist's blur of fingers, but you stay open-mouthed at the room itself: an inverted stained-glass skylight glowing overhead, mosaic columns and sculpted muses framing the stage.

These summer performances pair a tight ensemble of dancer, singer and guitarist in an intimate concert format. Expect the full emotional arc of flamenco, from mournful soleá to foot-hammering bulerías, in acoustics built for sound to soar. It is more polished recital than smoky tablao, and all the more spectacular for the setting.

Tips for your visit

Book ahead online, as these shows sell out fast in peak summer. Seats are unallocated in some tiers, so arrive 30-40 minutes early for a central spot with a clear view of both dancer and skylight. If you can, add a daytime guided tour of the Palau to fully appreciate the architecture in daylight. Dress smart-casual, and hold your applause until the end of each piece, following the lead of the seasoned Spanish audience around you.

Where it happens
How to get there
Fly into Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), 15 km southwest of the centre. The Aerobús or R2 Nord train reaches the city in about 30 minutes; from Passeig de Gràcia or Plaça Catalunya it is a short ride onward. The Palau de la Música Catalana sits in the Sant Pere neighbourhood, a 5-minute walk from Urquinaona metro station (L1 and L4). Barcelona's L4 (yellow line) is the handiest, or walk 10 minutes from Plaça de Catalunya. The lanes around the hall are narrow and pedestrianised, so metro beats taxi for the final approach.
