Shakespeare's magical comedy under London's summer sky at the leafy Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, a beloved picnic-and-play tradition.

Regent's Park Open Air Theatre is a London summer institution: a 1,200-seat amphitheatre hidden among the trees of one of the city's royal parks, staging plays and musicals only in the warmer months. 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is a perfect match for it, Shakespeare's tale of lovers, fairies and mischief unfolding in an actual woodland glade, with birdsong, rustling leaves and the fading evening light becoming part of the production.

The setting does much of the work. As dusk falls and the stage lighting takes over, the enchanted forest of the play merges with the real one around you, and the comedy's magic and mayhem feel wonderfully at home. It is a relaxed, festive night out, and picnicking before the show is a cherished part of the ritual.

Tips for a good evening

Bring or buy a picnic and arrive early, as the theatre opens its grounds well before curtain and the pre-show gardens and bar are half the pleasure. Pack layers and something waterproof, as performances are outdoors and go ahead in light rain; a blanket is handy once the sun goes down. Book ahead for weekend and peak-summer dates, which sell strongly. Seats are tiered benches with backs, and even the higher rows enjoy good views across the natural stage. The theatre is a 10-minute walk from Baker Street station through the park, so allow time to find the entrance.
