Shakespeare's comedy staged as it was in 1600, open-air with standing groundlings and all, at the reconstructed Globe on Bankside.

Shakespeare's Globe is a faithful reconstruction of the open-air playhouse where many of Shakespeare's plays were first performed, rebuilt close to the original site on the south bank of the Thames. Seeing a comedy like 'Love's Labour's Lost' here is as close as you can get to Elizabethan theatre: performed in daylight or under the open sky, with no artificial amplification, and with a direct, bantering relationship between actors and audience that modern theatres rarely allow.

The signature experience is standing in the yard as a groundling, right up against the stage for the price of a modest ticket, just as the cheapest places worked four centuries ago. Around and above, three tiers of covered wooden galleries ring the stage. Expect live period music, vivid costumes and plenty of playful interaction, and the wordplay-heavy 'Love's Labour's Lost' rewards close attention, landing its jokes beautifully in this responsive space.

Know before you go

The yard is standing-only and uncovered, so groundlings should wear comfortable shoes and bring a rain layer; umbrellas are not allowed, and the show goes on in most weather. Gallery seats are covered but bench-style, so cushions and backrests, which can be hired, are well worth it for a play of two to three hours. Book ahead for popular dates, arrive early to claim a good spot at the stage edge if standing, and note that the theatre is a short walk from Blackfriars and London Bridge stations along the riverside.
