▸ About this event

Shakespeare's most magical comedy of fairies, lovers and mischief, staged under the open sky at London's reconstructed Globe theatre on the Thames.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is Shakespeare's most enchanting comedy, a moonlit tangle of quarrelling lovers, meddling fairies and a troupe of hapless amateur actors, and it's tailor-made for the open-air Globe on London's Bankside. Watching it in this faithful reconstruction of the original playhouse, with the stage jutting into a standing yard and galleries wrapped around three sides, brings the play's mischief and magic thrillingly close. For travellers it's one of London's most distinctive theatrical experiences, Shakespeare performed in the kind of space he wrote for.

The Globe's productions of the Dream tend to be riotous, playful affairs, full of music, dance, physical comedy and direct interaction with the crowd. Puck darts through the audience, the lovers' squabbles spill toward the yard, and the play-within-a-play sequence lands its laughs on real, present faces. With performances running from afternoon into the long summer dusk, the natural light shifts as the story does, adding to the spell.

Tips for going

For the full experience, grab a standing groundling ticket in the yard, which is cheap but means being on your feet throughout, so wear comfortable shoes. Gallery seats are more comfortable, and cushions and backrests can be hired. Being open-air, it plays through rain, so pack a poncho, as umbrellas are barred. The run stretches across summer and sells briskly for weekend and evening shows, so book in advance.
