▸ About this event

Sumiyoshi Matsuri runs 30 July-1 August 2026 at Osaka's Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine, with a purification rite and a two-tonne portable-shrine procession.

Held at the end of July and traditionally seen as the event that closes out Osaka's summer festival season, Sumiyoshi Matsuri centres on Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines and the head of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. It is a festival of purification and renewal rather than spectacle for its own sake, and its rituals reach back centuries.

## What to expect

The festival unfolds over several days. Its ceremonial heart is the nagoshi-no-harae purification rite, in which participants in Muromachi-period costume pass through a large ring of woven miscanthus reed to cleanse themselves of the year's misfortune. The finale is the mikoshi togyo on 1 August, when a portable shrine, said to be among the largest in Osaka, is carried in procession from Sumiyoshi Taisha toward Shukuin Tongu shrine, borne on the shoulders of shouting bearers. Food stalls and evening crowds fill the shrine precincts across the festival days.

The shrine sits beside Sumiyoshi-Taisha Station on the Nankai and Hankai lines, a short ride south from central Osaka. Go on 31 July for the purification ceremony or 1 August for the procession; evenings are busiest and warmest, so bring water for the summer heat.

How to get there

Osaka is served by Kansai International Airport (KIX) and, for domestic flights, Itami (ITM). The festival centres on Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan's oldest shrines, in southern Osaka. The shrine sits right beside Sumiyoshitaisha Station on the Nankai Main Line, with the Sumiyoshi-toriimae stop on the Hankai tram alongside. From KIX, take the Nankai line toward Namba and change to a local train for Sumiyoshitaisha, roughly 50-60 minutes. The festival highlight is the lively mikoshi procession crossing the shrine's steep, arched Sorihashi bridge.
