Asanha Bucha Day (29 July) and Khao Phansa (30 July 2026) mark the start of Buddhist Lent in Bangkok, with candle-lit temple ceremonies citywide.
**Asanha Bucha Day** and the following day's **Khao Phansa** are among the most important dates in Thailand's Buddhist calendar, and in Bangkok they turn the city's temples into the focus of quiet, candle-lit devotion. Asanha Bucha commemorates the Buddha's first sermon and the founding of the monastic community; Khao Phansa marks the beginning of the three-month **Buddhist Lent** (the rains retreat), when monks traditionally remain within their temple grounds for study and meditation. Together they are a more contemplative counterpoint to Thailand's louder festivals.
## What to expect
The defining ritual is the evening **wian tian** — worshippers circle a temple's main hall three times, clockwise, carrying lit candles, incense and flowers. Major Bangkok temples such as **Wat Pho** and **Wat Saket** (the Golden Mount) fill with locals making merit, offering food to monks and lighting candles at dusk. As national Buddhist holidays, both days see a ban on alcohol sales, and many bars and clubs close, giving the city a notably calmer feel. Visitors are welcome to observe respectfully.
Arrive at a temple in the early evening for the candle procession, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and expect public transport and temples to be busy but orderly.

Where it happens
How to get there
Arrive via Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 30 minutes, connecting to the BTS Skytrain. Asanha Bucha observances centre on Bangkok's temples; for the Grand Palace and Wat Pho area, the nearest access is the MRT Blue Line to Sanam Chai station, or a Chao Phraya river boat to Tha Tien pier. Temples such as Wat Saket (the Golden Mount) are near Phan Fa Lilat. Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, as this is a solemn Buddhist holy day, and expect candlelit evening processions.
