▸ About this event

An intimate evening of live fado, Portugal's soul-baring song, paired with tastings of the port wine that made Porto famous.

Fado is Portugal's melancholy heart set to music, a UNESCO-recognised song tradition built on longing, or saudade. In Porto, these evening shows fold that emotional performance together with the city's other great export, port wine, for a compact taste of northern Portuguese culture in one sitting.

A typical show gathers a singer and one or two guitarists, including the pear-shaped Portuguese guitarra with its shimmering, tearful tone. The lights drop, conversation stops, and the room leans in as the fadista pours out songs of love, loss and the sea. Between or after sets you sample port, often a white, a tawny and a ruby, learning how these fortified wines are aged in the riverside lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro.

Tips for your visit

Venues are small and atmospheric, so book in advance, especially on summer weekends. Fado etiquette matters: stay quiet and still while someone is singing, as clapping or chatter mid-song is frowned upon. Arrive a little early to settle in and start the tastings unhurried. Go easy on the port if you have an early start, and ask staff which style you enjoyed most so you can seek it out in the Gaia cellars next day.

How to get there

Fly into Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), about 11 km north of Porto. The metro purple line (E) runs directly from the airport to the centre in roughly 30 minutes; change at Trindade for lines serving the historic core. Most fado venues cluster in the Ribeira and Sé districts near the river; São Bento, with its famous tiled station, and Aliados are the nearest metro stops, followed by a short downhill walk. The old town's steep, cobbled lanes are best on foot, so aim for a São Bento arrival and stroll down toward the Douro.
