▸ About this event

Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet danced under the stars at the ancient Circus Maximus, grand open-air ballet in the heart of Rome.

Each summer the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma moves outdoors, and among its most spectacular offerings is ballet staged at the Circus Maximus, the vast ancient arena where Romans once watched chariot races. Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet', with its surging, cinematic score, is a natural fit for the epic setting: a full company of dancers performing Shakespeare's tragedy against the backdrop of the Palatine Hill, floodlit under the Roman night sky.

The scale is part of the magic. A large temporary stage and grandstand rise on the grassy expanse of the Circo Massimo, and the combination of live orchestra, dramatic lighting and open-air ruins gives the familiar story a genuinely grand atmosphere. It is ballet as summer spectacle, and tickets are typically far easier to come by, and cheaper, than a winter night at the opera house.

Plan ahead

Summer performances usually span only a handful of nights, so book as soon as dates are announced. Evenings can still be warm, but the open site cools after dark, so bring a light layer. Seats range from close-in premium blocks to more distant tiers; a mid-range seat balances price against sightlines across the wide stage. Arrive early to find your grandstand entrance and settle before the music starts, and factor in that the site is a short walk from Circo Massimo metro station. A pair of opera glasses helps if you are seated toward the back of the arena.
