Thai Mother's Day, marking Queen Sirikit's birthday, is celebrated across Bangkok on 12 August 2026 with ceremonies, candlelight and festivities around Sanam Luang.
Every 12 August Thailand observes National Mother's Day, a public holiday timed to the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. The date was moved to coincide with her birthday in 1976, binding the country's celebration of motherhood to reverence for the royal family. In Bangkok the day carries a distinctive visual identity: the colour blue, associated with the Queen Mother, appears on ribbons, banners and clothing, and jasmine — the traditional flower of Thai motherhood — is given to mothers across the city. Public buildings and homes are decorated in her honour, and the mood is at once civic, devotional and family-centred.
## What to expect
The focal point in the capital is the ceremonial heart of the old city around Sanam Luang and the Grand Palace, where crowds gather through the day and an evening candle-lighting ceremony pays homage to the Queen Mother. Families mark the day privately as well, with children honouring their mothers, and streets, temples and public spaces are dressed in blue and lit for the occasion. Alms-giving and merit-making at temples are common in the morning.
Expect large, respectful crowds and heightened security near the royal quarter; dress modestly, arrive early for a place near the evening ceremony, and reach the Rattanakosin area on foot or by river boat, as roads are often closed.
