▸ About this event

Gion Matsuri's Yamaboko Junko float procession rolls through central Kyoto on 17 July 2026, with paid grandstand seats along the route.

Gion Matsuri is Kyoto's greatest festival, a UNESCO-recognised tradition running across the whole of July and dating back more than a thousand years to a purification rite meant to ward off plague. Its visual climax is the Yamaboko Junko, the grand procession of yama and hoko floats, some towering many metres high, weighing tonnes, and hauled through the streets on enormous wooden wheels by teams of pullers. These floats, hung with heirloom tapestries and topped with pikes and figures, have earned the festival the nickname of a moving museum.

## What to expect

The procession takes place in two parts: the larger Saki Matsuri parade on 17 July and the smaller Ato Matsuri on 24 July. On the morning of the 17th, dozens of floats process along a route through central Kyoto, including Kawaramachi-dori and Oike-dori, where the massive hoko floats are turned at street corners in a slow, dramatic manoeuvre. Paid grandstand (viewing) seats are sold along the route, offering a guaranteed spot to watch the floats pass in the July heat, with tickets available through official channels and Japanese ticket agencies.

The procession begins in the morning; a reserved grandstand seat is worth booking ahead if you want a comfortable view, as the free roadside spots fill early and shade is scarce.

How to get there

Gion Matsuri takes over central Kyoto through July, with the great float processions rolling down Shijo and Karasuma streets. Fly into Kansai International Airport (KIX), then take the JR Haruka limited express to Kyoto Station (around 75 minutes). From there, the Karasuma subway line reaches Shijo station in the heart of the festival zone, or take the Keihan line to Gion-Shijo station near the Yasaka Shrine. The float districts are compact and walkable. Expect road closures and enormous crowds on the yoiyama evenings before the main parades, so travel light and early.
