▸ About this event

The Braj region's exuberant Holi, where Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate the festival of colours at Krishna's homeland.

Holi, the Hindu festival of colours, is celebrated with special fervour in Mathura and Vrindavan, revered as Krishna's homeland. In 2027 Holika Dahan falls on March 21 and the main colour-throwing, Rangwali Holi, on March 22. Braj celebrations extend over roughly a week, including the famous Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon and the flower-Holi (Phoolon wali Holi) at Vrindavan's Banke Bihari temple, drawing pilgrims and visitors into temple courtyards awash with colour.

How to get there

These coordinates sit in the Braj region around Mathura and Vrindavan, the spiritual heartland of Holi in Uttar Pradesh. The nearest large airport is Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (DEL), roughly 150 km north; Agra's airport is closer but has limited flights. From Delhi, the fastest option is a train to Mathura Junction (frequent services, around two to three hours) or a hired car via the Yamuna Expressway (about three hours). Mathura Junction and Vrindavan's local stations put you within a short auto-rickshaw ride of the temples. Roads clog badly during Holi week, so travel early and keep valuables protected from coloured powder and water.
