Marrakech's streets and squares erupt with Morocco's folk troupes, dancers, musicians and storytellers in a riotous celebration of popular arts.

The Marrakech Popular Arts Festival turns Morocco's most vibrant city into a stage for the country's living folk traditions. For a few days each summer, troupes of musicians, dancers, acrobats, snake charmers and storytellers gather from across Morocco and beyond to fill the squares, gardens and palaces with colour, rhythm and spectacle. If you want to feel the pulse of Moroccan culture in one intense hit, this is it.

What to expect

The heart of the action often centres on the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa square and historic venues like the El Badi Palace, where Berber, Gnaoua and Amazigh performers put on displays of trance music, hypnotic drumming and swirling dance. Fantasia, a thundering display of horsemen firing muskets in unison, is a traditional festival highlight. The whole city takes on a heightened, festive energy after dark.

Practical tips. Come in the evening when Jemaa el-Fnaa comes alive and the heat eases, and give yourself time to simply wander between performances rather than chasing a strict schedule. Dress modestly out of respect, carry small change to tip street performers, and agree any photo before snapping portraits. Stay hydrated, as July in Marrakech is hot, and keep valuables secure in the crowds.

Where it happens
How to get there
Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), only about 6 km from the centre; a taxi reaches the medina in 15–20 minutes (agree the fare first) and bus 19 runs to Jemaa el-Fnaa. The festival's core is the Jemaa el-Fnaa square and nearby historic sites in the old medina, whose lanes are pedestrian-only. The main Marrakech train station (Gare de Marrakech), linked by ONCF trains from Casablanca and Rabat, is about 3 km from the square, a short taxi ride away. Once in the medina, get around on foot, as cars cannot reach most venues.
