Live opera staged room by room inside a Grand Canal palazzo, the small audience following the singers through a Venetian home.

Musica a Palazzo reinvents the opera evening as something intimate and immersive. Rather than sitting in a grand theatre, the small audience follows the singers from room to room through Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto, a fifteenth-century Venetian palace on the Grand Canal. Each act unfolds in a different frescoed salon, the performers, a handful of singers and a small ensemble, often just an arm's length away. A favourite production is Verdi's 'La Traviata', staged in exactly the kind of aristocratic setting the opera depicts.

The effect is remarkable. With no stage, no microphones and no distance, you feel the voices resonate in the room and become part of the drama as it moves around you. Between acts the audience rises and walks to the next salon, glass of prosecco often in hand, the palace's canal-side windows and antique furnishings setting the scene.

Before you book

Capacity is tiny, often only a few dozen places, so reserve well in advance, especially in high season. Seating is unallocated and you will move between rooms, so arrive early to choose your spot and note that front-row places put you extraordinarily close to the singers. Performances usually run in the evening and last a couple of hours; the historic rooms can be warm in summer, so wear light layers. The palace is a short walk from the Santa Maria del Giglio vaporetto stop, but allow extra time to find it through Venice's maze of alleys rather than relying on a fast route.

Where it happens
How to get there
Fly into Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) on the mainland. Performances take place in Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto, a private palace on the Grand Canal near Santa Maria del Giglio. From the airport, the Alilaguna water bus or a land bus to Piazzale Roma connects to the vaporetto network; take vaporetto line 1 to the Santa Maria del Giglio stop, a two-minute walk from the palace. Allow 60-90 minutes from the airport. As everywhere in Venice, expect to finish the journey on foot over a bridge or two, since there are no cars.
