Open-air film nights on the ramparts of Barcelona's Montjuïc castle, with live music before each screening and the city glittering below.

Sala Montjuïc turns the moat and grounds of the Castell de Montjuïc into one of Barcelona's most magical summer rituals: outdoor cinema under the stars, high on the hill overlooking the city and the sea. It is as much a picnic-and-atmosphere event as a film screening, and locals treat it that way.

Each evening typically opens with a short concert or live music set, then rolls into a feature film, usually a mix of classics and recent crowd-pleasers shown on a giant screen against the fortress walls. People spread out blankets, uncork wine, share tapas and settle in as the sky darkens and the city lights flicker below. The combination of live music, a great film and that hilltop setting makes for a wonderfully relaxed, quintessentially Barcelona night.

Tips for your visit

Bring or hire a cushion or a blanket, as most seating is on the ground; some deckchairs may be available. Arrive early, ideally before sunset, to grab a good spot, catch the concert and enjoy the views. Pack a picnic and layers, since the hilltop cools after dark. Films are often shown in their original language with Spanish subtitles, so check the listing. Book ahead for popular titles on warm weekend nights.

Where it happens
How to get there
Fly into Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), 15 km southwest; the Aerobús or R2 Nord train reaches the centre in about 30 minutes. To climb Montjuïc, take the metro to Paral·lel (L2 and L3), then the Funicular de Montjuïc up the hill, followed by a short walk or the cable car toward the castle. Buses 150 and 55 also serve the mountain. Screenings are up at the Castell de Montjuïc, so allow extra time for the ascent, and note that late-night return options thin out; plan your way back down before you head up.
