Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival 2026 fires around 20,000 shells over the Sumida River near Asakusa and Tokyo Skytree on the evening of 25 July.
The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is the grande dame of Tokyo's summer hanabi calendar, with roots stretching back to the Edo period and the riverside firework displays of the 18th century. Held on the last Saturday of July, it draws close to a million spectators to the banks of the Sumida River in the historic Asakusa district, where the fireworks burst above the water with Tokyo Skytree rising in the background.
## What to expect
Around 20,000 fireworks are launched from two sites along the river, staged near the Sakura Bridge and the Komagata Bridge, with the two venues sometimes running as a friendly competition of pyrotechnic design. The display runs for roughly ninety minutes into the summer night. The atmosphere is quintessentially Japanese summer: crowds in yukata, riverside food stalls, and families staking out spots hours ahead. It is spectacular but genuinely packed, so patience with the crowds is part of the deal.
The nearest access is a short walk from Asakusa Station. Arrive well before the evening start to claim a viewing spot, as the best riverside positions fill early in the afternoon; quieter views can be found further from the two launch sites.

Where it happens
How to get there
The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival lights up the Sumida River around Asakusa in eastern Tokyo. Fly into Haneda Airport (HND) or Narita (NRT); from Haneda, the Keikyu line and Toei Asakusa line connect through to Asakusa Station, served by the Ginza, Toei Asakusa and Tobu lines and just steps from the best riverbank viewing. Stations near the launch sites become extraordinarily crowded, with entry restrictions on the night, so arrive hours early and consider walking in from a station one or two stops away to avoid the worst of the crush.
