▸ About this event

Massed pipes, drums and military pageantry light up Edinburgh Castle's esplanade in the world-famous nighttime Tattoo spectacle.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the great spectacles of the British summer: massed pipes and drums, military bands and international performers marching across the floodlit esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, with the ancient fortress looming above as the ultimate backdrop. Staged each August alongside the city's festival season, it draws visitors from around the world and it is worth planning a trip around.

What to expect

Grandstands wrap around the castle esplanade, and the show builds through precision drill, Highland dancing, fireworks and guest acts from armed forces across the globe. The emotional high point is the Lone Piper on the castle ramparts, a genuinely goosebump moment, before the whole cast masses together for the finale. The 2026 edition carries the theme "A Call to Gather."

Practical tips. Tickets sell out fast, often months ahead, so book early and buy only through official channels. It is outdoors and Edinburgh weather is famously changeable, so bring warm, waterproof layers even in August, as the show runs rain or shine. Arrive with plenty of time, as the castle approach is steep and cobbled and the surrounding streets are packed during festival season. Covered seating exists but is limited and pricier.
