Vivaldi's Four Seasons played by a period-style ensemble beneath the baroque dome of Vienna's Karlskirche, one of the city's grandest churches.

Few pieces travel as well as Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and few settings flatter it like the Karlskirche (St Charles's Church), Vienna's magnificent baroque landmark with its great green dome and twin columns. These concerts put a chamber ensemble, often in period costume and playing with baroque phrasing, under that soaring painted cupola, so the music's storms, birdsong and harvest dances ring out in richly resonant acoustics.

The Four Seasons anchors most programmes, frequently rounded out with Pachelbel, Bach or Mozart favourites. Hearing the violin depict summer thunder or winter's shivering strings inside a candle-warmed baroque interior is a genuinely goosebump-raising experience, and an accessible one that needs no concert-going background to enjoy. The visual drama of the church itself doubles the payoff.

Tips for your visit

Book online ahead for summer dates and choose a higher seat category for a clear central view, as pillars can obstruct cheaper sides. Arrive 20-30 minutes early to take in the interior and, if offered, the elevator up toward the dome frescoes during renovation-era access. It is a working church, so dress respectfully and keep phones silent. Evenings can be cool inside, so bring a light layer.

Fly into Vienna International Airport (VIE), about 18 km southeast; the City Airport Train (CAT) or S7 reaches Wien Mitte in 15-25 minutes, then connect by U-Bahn. The Karlskirche stands on Karlsplatz, directly above one of the city's biggest interchange stations, served by the U1, U2 and U4 metro lines and multiple trams. From Wien Mitte take the U4 a few stops to Karlsplatz; the church is a 2-minute walk across the square. It could hardly be easier to reach, so skip the taxi.
