Lorraine is the other half of france.fr's Alsace-Lorraine hub and a different country from its neighbour — French-speaking, ducal rather than Germanic, and marked far more deeply by the twentieth century. Place Stanislas in Nancy is a UNESCO site and one of the great squares of Europe, gilded railings and all; the city then invented Art Nouveau glass a century later through the École de Nancy. Metz has a cathedral with 6,500 m² of stained glass, including Chagall's, and a Centre Pompidou outpost. Verdun, an hour west, was the longest battle of the First World War.
