The resort
Hemavan sits at the western end of the Swedish mountains near the Norwegian border, the more developed half of the Hemavan-Tärnaby pair and a quietly serious destination for those who like their skiing wild. Pistes climb above the tree line onto open fells, but the real draw is the enormous accessible off-piste and ski-touring terrain that fans out from the top lifts into the surrounding wilderness. It suits families and cruisers on the groomed runs and confident freeriders in the powder bowls in equal measure, with a low-key, outdoorsy village rather than a party scene. The season is long and reliably cold this far north, and clear nights can bring the aurora. It feels remote and unhurried, a place to ski for the landscape as much as the descents.

How to get there
Hemavan Tärnaby Airport (HMV) sits within walking distance of the lifts, with flights to and from Stockholm Arlanda; it is the natural gateway rather than any airport across the Norwegian border.
With the airport beside the resort, transfers are minimal; road access is also possible by long-distance coach or car from Stockholm and coastal Sweden.
Best time: February and March bring the best combination of reliable snow, lengthening daylight and long spring touring days.
