The snow centre
Tindastóll is a modest community ski area on the flanks of its namesake mountain, above the town of Sauðárkrókur in Iceland's remote north-west. Served by a handful of simple lifts, it is the kind of place where local families and clubs ski through the dark Icelandic winter rather than a destination resort. The far-northern location means genuine, often abundant snow, but also short daylight and weather that can close the hill for days at a time. Views stretch over Skagafjörður fjord and the surrounding peaks, and the atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming. Come for a taste of authentic Icelandic skiing well off the tourist trail.
