Bahamas Family Adventure: Nassau, Paradise Island & Grand Bahama

A seven-night family week built around two easy-to-reach islands — four nights on Nassau and Paradise Island for Atlantis, the forts and the Fish Fry, then three on Grand Bahama for national-park caves, Gold Rock Beach and a dolphin day — with a short flight between and an open-jaw home leg from Freeport.

Overview

This is the Bahamas for a family that wants the big-ticket wins without long travel days. You spend the first four nights on Nassau and Paradise Island, where Atlantis Aquaventure's slides and marine habitats headline, the harbour forts and the Queen's Staircase give the older kids a bit of history, and the Arawak Cay Fish Fry is dinner-and-a-scene. Then a short hop north to Grand Bahama swaps the resort buzz for national-park caves, the wide low-tide expanse of Gold Rock Beach, a dolphin encounter and — for anyone who missed the Exuma originals — a Freeport-side swim-with-the-pigs boat trip. The two islands connect by a quick flight, you fly home open-jaw from Freeport rather than doubling back, and there's no rental car dragged between islands — you pick one up only on Grand Bahama, where the sights are spread along the coast. The trip leads on where you sleep, with each island's family-friendly base as the primary booking and the boat days and Aquaventure as the add-ons.

8 days, day by day. Open any day for the morning-to-evening plan, where to eat, and where you sleep that night.

  1. Day 1 Fri 31 Jul Arrive Nassau & Paradise Island Base day

    Arrive Nassau & Paradise Island

Morning. Land at Lynden Pindling International (NAS), taxi ~20 minutes to the resort and drop bags.

Afternoon. A first swim at Cable Beach or the resort pool and an easy poolside afternoon to reset.

Evening. A relaxed family dinner near the resort strip.

Eat. Cracked conch and Bahamian mac and cheese; conch fritters the kids will actually eat.

Where to stay. Base on Cable Beach or Paradise Island — a Baha Mar or Atlantis-area resort keeps the beach, the pools and the sights close, and is the primary booking of the leg. Families do best with easy beach access for the first jet-lagged day.

Optional / swaps. A sunset walk along Cable Beach if the flight lands early.

Practical. USD is accepted everywhere and pegged 1:1; carry cash for taxis and the Fish Fry.

  2. Day 2 Sat 1 Aug Nassau & Paradise Island Base day

    Nassau: Atlantis Aquaventure

Morning. A full morning at Atlantis Aquaventure — the water slides, the lazy river and the marine habitat under the Royal Towers are the trip's headline for younger travellers.

Afternoon. More Aquaventure, or cross to Cabbage Beach on the ocean side for calmer swimming.

Evening. Dinner at Marina Village and the harbour lights.

Eat. Fresh snapper and fries; guava duff for pudding.

Where to stay. Same base — no moving for the first four nights.

Optional / swaps. Blue Lagoon Island for a day-pass beach and sea-lion or dolphin programme.

Practical. Aquaventure is included for Atlantis guests; day-passes for non-guests sell out — book ahead.

  3. Day 3 Sun 2 Aug Nassau & Paradise Island Base day

Nassau: forts, staircase & Fish Fry

Morning. Downtown Nassau — the Queen's Staircase carved through the limestone, Fort Fincastle and the view over the harbour, then Bay Street and the Straw Market.

Afternoon. Lunch at Arawak Cay (the Fish Fry) with conch salad chopped to order, then beach time back at the resort.

Evening. An early dinner; the little ones will have had a big day.

Eat. Conch salad at Arawak Cay; a fresh coconut water from a roadside stall.

Where to stay. Third Nassau night at the same base.

Optional / swaps. A guided Nassau city-sights tour with rum-cake and conch-fritter tastings covers the forts and the food in one easy hit for the grown-ups.

Practical. Downtown is busiest on big cruise-ship days — do the forts and the staircase early.

    🛏 Nassau & Paradise Island · 1 night · 2 guests

  4. Day 4 Mon 3 Aug Nassau & Paradise Island Base day

    Nassau: beach & Blue Lagoon

Morning. A boat out to Blue Lagoon Island for a calm-water beach day, or a Nassau swimming-pigs-and-turtles boat trip if you want the pigs experience without flying to Exuma.

Afternoon. Back to the resort beach and pool; pack for the short morning flight north.

Evening. A last Paradise Island dinner.

Eat. Fresh lobster in season; a last plate of mac and cheese.

Where to stay. Fourth and final Nassau night at the same base.

Optional / swaps. A snorkel trip off New Providence for the older kids.

Practical. The Nassau pigs boat is a good plan-B for the pigs, though the Exuma originals in our island-hopper trips are the real thing.

  5. Day 5 Tue 4 Aug Nassau & Paradise Island → Grand Bahama (Freeport) ~280 km Fly

    Nassau → Grand Bahama

Morning. A short 40-minute flight north to Grand Bahama International (FPO).

Afternoon. Settle into Port Lucaya, walk the marketplace and a first swim at Lucaya Beach.

Evening. Live rake-and-scrape music at the Port Lucaya marketplace and a harbourside dinner.

Eat. Grilled snapper and conch fritters at the marketplace; a cold Sands for the grown-ups.

Where to stay. Base at Freeport / Port Lucaya — a Lucaya-area hotel puts you near the marketplace, the dive operators and the beaches, and is the primary booking of the leg.

Optional / swaps. A sunset catamaran cruise out of Port Lucaya to end the travel day gently.

Practical. Grand Bahama is spread out along the coast — arrange a hire car or a driver for the park day.

    🛏 Grand Bahama (Freeport) · 1 night · 2 guests

  6. Day 6 Wed 5 Aug Grand Bahama (Freeport) Base day

    Grand Bahama: Lucayan National Park

Morning. Drive east to Lucayan National Park — Ben's Cave and the Burial Mound Cave sit above one of the world's longest surveyed underwater cave systems, an easy, shady boardwalk for families.

Afternoon. Cross the park's mangrove boardwalk to Gold Rock Beach, the wide low-tide "sandbar" beach that stretches out for what feels like forever as the water pulls back.

Evening. Back to Lucaya for dinner and an early night before the dolphin day.

Eat. A beach picnic at Gold Rock; conch chowder back in town.

Where to stay. Same Freeport base.

Optional / swaps. A blue-hole drift-snorkel and turtle boat trip instead of the caves if the tide is wrong.

Practical. Time the park with low tide — Gold Rock Beach is at its widest and best as the water recedes.

    🛏 Grand Bahama (Freeport) · 1 night · 2 guests

  7. Day 7 Thu 6 Aug Grand Bahama (Freeport) Base day

Grand Bahama: dolphins & the pigs

Morning. A UNEXSO dolphin encounter out of Port Lucaya — a close, well-run programme that is the day's highlight for most families.

Afternoon. A Freeport-side swim-with-the-pigs boat trip for anyone who missed the Exuma originals, or a reef snorkel and beach afternoon.

Evening. A farewell dinner at Port Lucaya.

Eat. Fresh lobster or grouper; a last slice of guava duff.

Where to stay. Final night at the same Freeport base.

Optional / swaps. A catamaran sunset cruise with drinks and snacks to close the trip.

Practical. Confirm tomorrow's flight and transfer times tonight; FPO check-in for US-bound flights includes pre-clearance and takes time.

    🛏 Grand Bahama (Freeport) · 1 night · 2 guests

  8. Day 8 Fri 7 Aug Grand Bahama (Freeport) Base day

    Depart Grand Bahama

Morning. Transfer to Grand Bahama International (FPO) and fly home — the open-jaw departure saves doubling back to Nassau.

    Afternoon. Long-haul home.

    Evening.

Eat. A last conch fritter before security.

    Where to stay.

Optional / swaps. A final morning swim at Lucaya Beach if the flight is afternoon.

Practical. FPO is small but US pre-clearance is thorough — arrive with time in hand.

How we estimate

  • Accommodation — per-person nightly by destination, minimum two sharing, × season × tier.
  • Standard (Mid) = 3–4★+ — estimates assume our audience’s baseline: 3–4★ or better, never below a ~£75/night room floor. Premium higher; Budget lower.
  • Meals — per person, per day, by country. Fuel — from the route distance. Season — from your dates.

These are planning estimates, not quotes. Premium properties and popular tourist hubs run above the country average, especially in peak season. Where live cost data isn’t available yet, some countries use representative figures.

Eat your way across

A taste of every country you travel through — the food culture worth going out of your way for, and the signature dishes to seek out.

Bahamas

Conch every possible way, washed down with an ice-cold Kalik at the Fish Fry.

In the Bahamas, the day revolves around conch — pronounced 'konk', and something close to a national obsession. Watch it cleaned straight from the shell at a roadside stand, then eaten a dozen ways: scorched conch scored raw and dressed with lime and bird pepper, cracked conch battered and fried gold, or diced ceviche-style into conch salad with tomato and sweet pepper. Across 700 low-lying islands the sea sets the menu — grouper, snapper and spiny lobster over any meat.

The spiritual home of it all is the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay in Nassau, a strip of open-air shacks where locals gather over fried fish, peas 'n' rice and cold Kalik, 'the beer of the Bahamas'. Order a sky juice — gin, coconut water and sweet milk, said to have been improvised here during Prohibition — and let a slow, salt-air lunch stretch out.

A little history

To understand what you see today, it helps to know the past — the civilisations and empires that shaped the culture, food and architecture of the places on this route.

Bahamas
  • The Arawak-speaking Lucayan Taíno settled the islands from around 500–800 AD, with conch already a staple
  • Columbus made his first American landfall here in 1492, and enslavement and disease soon wiped out the Lucayans
  • English settlers arrived from the 1640s, and Nassau grew into a pirate haven until 1718
  • a British colony reinforced by Loyalist planters, the Bahamas became independent in 1973 and now run on tourism and finance

Family activities

The stops, games and moments that land best with kids and teens on this trip.

Big wins for families: Atlantis Aquaventure in Nassau, the Lucayan National Park caves and the wide, wadeable Gold Rock Beach on Grand Bahama, and the UNEXSO dolphin encounter. The single short flight keeps travel days painless, and there's a plan-B pigs boat on both islands so no one misses out.

Packing

What to bring for this trip — the easy-to-forget essentials.

Clothing

Beachwear, light breathable layers, a light jacket for air-conditioning and boat decks, one smart-casual outfit for dinners.

Footwear

Reef shoes for the caves and rocks, sandals, trainers for the park boardwalks.

Activity gear

Snorkel gear if fussy, a dry bag for boat days, reef-safe sun cream, hats and sunglasses, and swim nappies for the little ones.

Documents / money

Passport, no-foreign-fee card, USD cash for taxis, the Fish Fry and beach bars.

Health

High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, motion-sickness tablets for the flight and boat days, basic first-aid and after-sun.

Drone rules (sub-250g)

Where you can and can’t fly a small drone along the way — the rules change sharply from one country to the next, so check before you launch.

  • Bahamas
Effectively no fly-on-arrival — the Civil Aviation Authority requires every drone, tourists included, to be registered in advance (about $30, valid 30 days) before flying, capped at 400ft. ⚠ Foreign visitors must register with CAA-B before travelling; drones over 249g also need a home-country registration copy, no flying within 5,000m of any aerodrome, and commercial or media filming needs a separate permit. Rules checked: Jul 2026

National parks, protected sites and religious/heritage venues often have their own rules and permits — always check the specific site before you fly.
