Overview

This is the couples' cut of the Bahamas hopper: three of the most romantic islands in the chain, in the same north-to-south direction as the classic route, but slowed down and stripped back for a honeymoon. You open with two easy nights on Nassau and Paradise Island for resort comfort and a first taste of Bahamian food, cross by fast ferry to Harbour Island for three nights of the country's most photographed beach and its quiet, golf-cart-only Dunmore Town, then fly south to the Exumas for three nights among the sandbars, the swimming pigs and the James Bond snorkel cave. Every island change is a ferry or a short hop by light aircraft — there is no long open-water slog and no rental car between islands. The pace is deliberately gentle: one anchor activity a day, a beach, and a good dinner. It is priced and paced for a couple who want privacy and beauty over nightlife, and it leads on where you sleep — each island stop is anchored to a premium stay, with boat trips and excursions as add-ons.

    Arrive Nassau & Paradise Island

    Morning. Land at Lynden Pindling International (NAS), clear immigration and take the ~25-minute taxi over the bridge to Paradise Island. Bahamian arrivals are unhurried — don't schedule anything tight for day one.

    Afternoon. Settle in and walk out to Cabbage Beach, the long soft-sand strand on the ocean side of Paradise Island, for a first swim and a rum punch.

    Evening. An easy dinner near the marina; watch the yachts and go to bed early after the flight.

    Eat. Cracked conch and a cold Kalik to mark the arrival — the national beer and the national bar snack.

    Where to stay. Paradise Island is the romantic anchor — an Ocean Club-style beachfront room or the adults-only wing of a Paradise Island resort puts Cabbage Beach on your doorstep and Nassau a short bridge away. Book the stay first; everything else here is an add-on.

    Optional / swaps. A quiet sunset drink at the resort rather than a big night — you have the islands ahead of you.

    Practical. US dollars are accepted everywhere at par with the Bahamian dollar; carry some cash for taxis and beach bars.

  2. Day 2 Sat 1 Aug Nassau & Paradise Island Base day

    Nassau & Paradise Island

    Morning. Cross into downtown Nassau for the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle, cut into the limestone above the town, then browse Bay Street.

    Afternoon. Lunch and conch salad chopped to order at Arawak Cay (the "Fish Fry"), then back to the beach or the resort pool for the hot part of the day.

    Evening. A romantic dinner — a table at Graycliff or a quiet Paradise Island restaurant — and a nightcap watching the harbour.

    Eat. Conch salad at Arawak Cay, chopped raw in front of you with citrus, onion and Scotch bonnet; guava duff for pudding.

    Where to stay. Second night at the same Paradise Island base — no packing, no moving.

    Optional / swaps. A couples' tour of John Watling's Distillery for rum tasting in a colonial estate, or a half-day at Atlantis Aquaventure.

    Practical. Downtown Nassau is busy on cruise-ship days; go early or late to avoid the Bay Street crowds.

  3. Day 3 Sun 2 Aug Nassau & Paradise Island → Harbour Island (Eleuthera) ~110 km Ferry

    Nassau → Harbour Island

    Morning. Board the fast ferry from Nassau across to Harbour Island (or fly the 15 minutes to North Eleuthera and take the five-minute water taxi across).

    Afternoon. Check in and walk straight out to Pink Sands Beach for the light — the three-mile strand whose coral-pink tint is real and strongest in soft morning and evening sun.

    Evening. Golf-cart into Dunmore Town's pastel lanes for dinner — the island runs on carts, not cars.

    Eat. Fresh catch at a Bay Street table; Bahamian mac and cheese on the side.

    Where to stay. Harbour Island is the honeymoon centrepiece — Pink Sands Resort, The Dunmore or a Coral Sands beachfront room, steps from the pink beach. This is the priciest and most-photographed base of the trip; book it first and build the days around it.

    Optional / swaps. If the ferry lands late, keep the evening to a beach walk and an early night.

    Practical. Rent a golf cart on arrival and you'll never need anything else on the island.

    Harbour Island: Pink Sands

    Morning. A slow morning on Pink Sands Beach; snorkel the reef offshore or walk to the quieter northern end.

    Afternoon. A cart tour of Dunmore Town — the clapboard churches, the pastel colonial houses and the harbour side — with a stop for a rum punch.

    Evening. Sunset drinks on the harbour, then dinner in town.

    Eat. Conch chowder and grilled snapper; a slice of guava duff.

    Where to stay. Same Harbour Island base — the point of coming here is to stay put.

    Optional / swaps. A couples' massage or a lazy pool day if the beach has worn you out.

    Practical. Reef-safe sun cream only, and go easy at midday — the pink sand throws the light back at you.

  5. Day 5 Tue 4 Aug Harbour Island (Eleuthera) Base day

    Eleuthera day: Glass Window Bridge

    Morning. Water taxi across and a hired car or driver to the Glass Window Bridge, the narrow neck where the deep navy Atlantic meets the pale bank waters side by side — one of the most photogenic spots in the country.

    Afternoon. The Queen's Bath rock pools nearby (calm seas only), then French Leave Beach or Governor's Harbour for a long, quiet lunch.

    Evening. Back to Harbour Island for dinner.

    Eat. A Governor's Harbour lunch of fresh fish; pineapple anything (Eleuthera is pineapple country).

    Where to stay. Same base — this is a mainland Eleuthera day trip, bags stay put.

    Optional / swaps. The Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve for a shaded boardwalk if the coast is windy.

    Practical. Only approach the Queen's Bath in calm conditions — the Atlantic side is dangerous in swell.

  6. Day 6 Wed 5 Aug Harbour Island (Eleuthera) → The Exumas (Staniel Cay) ~197 km Fly

    Harbour Island → the Exumas

    Morning. Fly from North Eleuthera, connecting through Nassau (the Out Islands don't link directly), out to the Exuma Cays; the water below turns every shade of turquoise as you cross the banks.

    Afternoon. Drop bags and take a first slow boat out to a sandbar that surfaces only at low tide — barefoot, ankle-deep, nothing around you.

    Evening. Sundowners and grilled catch at the Yacht Club dock, where nurse sharks cruise under the lights.

    Eat. Fresh rock lobster in season (Aug–Mar) or grilled grouper at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club.

    Where to stay. Staniel Cay is the private-feeling Exuma base — the Staniel Cay Yacht Club or a Fowl Cay-style cottage, a handful of rooms in the heart of the northern cays, minutes from the pigs and the grotto. This base is scarce and books out; reserve it well ahead as the primary booking of the leg.

    Optional / swaps. If Staniel Cay is full, base George Town on Great Exuma and day-trip north — cheaper, but the marquee cays become a long boat run.

    Practical. Connectivity is patchy and card acceptance thin out here — bring cash and download anything you need before you fly.

  7. Day 7 Thu 6 Aug The Exumas (Staniel Cay) Base day

    The Exumas: Thunderball Grotto & the pigs

    Morning. Out early by boat to Big Major Cay to meet the famous swimming pigs before the day-trip boats arrive from Nassau; feed only from the water, never hand to mouth.

    Afternoon. Snorkel Thunderball Grotto at low tide — the light shafts through the roof of the cave used in the Bond film — then on to the rock iguanas at Bitter Guana Cay.

    Evening. A quiet dinner back on Staniel; the cays go dark and starry early.

    Eat. Conch fritters and a Goombay Smash sundowner on the dock.

    Where to stay. Same Staniel Cay base — you want to be here at dawn.

    Optional / swaps. Add the tame nurse sharks at Compass Cay (not yet a page in our catalogue — referenced by name; the nearest catalogued sight is the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park).

    Practical. Snorkel the grotto near slack low water and mind boat traffic overhead; there are mild currents inside.

    The Exumas: a private day on the water

    Morning. A private boat charter — the romantic splurge of the trip — to drift between empty cays, swim off the boat and picnic on a beach with no name.

    Afternoon. Snorkel a quiet reef in the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, the Caribbean's first marine reserve, then a last look at Pig Beach on the way back.

    Evening. Last dinner in the cays; toast the emptiness.

    Eat. Whatever came off the boat that day, grilled simply.

    Where to stay. Final Exuma night at the same base.

    Optional / swaps. Swap the charter for a shared full-day excursion if the budget is tighter — the sights are the same, the boat just fuller.

    Practical. Sea state governs everything here; a windy day can cancel boats even in the dry season, so keep this day flexible.

Bahamas

Conch every possible way, washed down with an ice-cold Kalik at the Fish Fry.

In the Bahamas, the day revolves around conch — pronounced 'konk', and something close to a national obsession. Watch it cleaned straight from the shell at a roadside stand, then eaten a dozen ways: scorched conch scored raw and dressed with lime and bird pepper, cracked conch battered and fried gold, or diced ceviche-style into conch salad with tomato and sweet pepper. Across 700 low-lying islands the sea sets the menu — grouper, snapper and spiny lobster over any meat.

The spiritual home of it all is the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay in Nassau, a strip of open-air shacks where locals gather over fried fish, peas 'n' rice and cold Kalik, 'the beer of the Bahamas'. Order a sky juice — gin, coconut water and sweet milk, said to have been improvised here during Prohibition — and let a slow, salt-air lunch stretch out.

Bahamas
  • The Arawak-speaking Lucayan Taíno settled the islands from around 500–800 AD, with conch already a staple
  • Columbus made his first American landfall here in 1492, and enslavement and disease soon wiped out the Lucayans
  • English settlers arrived from the 1640s, and Nassau grew into a pirate haven until 1718
  • a British colony reinforced by Loyalist planters, the Bahamas became independent in 1973 and now run on tourism and finance
