About Ubud
Why go
Ubud offers something genuinely different from the beach resort Bali experience: a place where traditional Balinese Hindu culture, extraordinary natural scenery, and a deeply developed wellness and yoga scene coexist in a highland setting that is significantly cooler than the south coast. For families, the combination of the Monkey Forest, Tegalalang Rice Terraces, traditional dance performances, and the easy accessibility of bicycle and cooking class activities creates a varied and engaging multi-day experience that works across age ranges. Ubud also serves as the base for Mount Batur volcano sunrise hikes, white-water rafting on the Ayung River, and elephant sanctuary visits — all within 30–60 minutes by scooter or car.
Highlights
- Tegalalang rice terrace sunrise walk
- Monkey Forest Sacred Monkey Sanctuary
- Pura Tirta Empul holy spring purification
- Traditional Kecak dance at Uluwatu
- Cooking class with organic rice farm
- Cycling through village and rice paddies

Getting around Ubud
Ubud has no public transport worth noting for tourists. Getting around requires: private driver (widely available, typically rented by the day for approximately £30–50, covering multiple destinations); scooter hire (widely available for approximately £5–8/day, requires an international licence category; not recommended for non-experienced riders given Bali's traffic); walking within the central Ubud area (Monkey Forest, Ubud Palace, Pasar Ubud market, and most galleries are within 30 minutes' walk); or Grab (rideshare app, now operational in Bali — not universally reliable in rural areas but working in central Ubud).
Ubud has no meaningful public transport network. Tourists rely on: private driver hire (negotiated by the day, approximately £30–50 per day; arrange through your hotel); Grab rideshare (operational in central Ubud — not all drivers will come to outlying areas); scooter hire (for experienced riders only); and walking within the town centre. Metered taxis from Denpasar-based companies (BlueBird) can be summoned by app to Ubud but cannot pick up on the street within Ubud. The airport shuttle service (fixed-rate minibus, approximately £10–15 per person, door-to-door) is the most practical arrival/departure option.
Insider tips
• Walk the Campuhan Ridge Walk (starting from the Tjampuhan Hotel bridge, 5 minutes from the palace) in the early morning (07:00) before the heat builds and the Instagram crowds arrive — the 9km route through rice terraces and jungle is one of Bali's finest walks and entirely free. • Tegalalang Rice Terraces (8km north of Ubud) are spectacular but entrance and platform photo fees have proliferated — walk past the photogenic spots at the top of the gorge road rather than paying to enter the lower terraced areas. • Book the evening Kecak fire dance at the Uluwatu Temple (40 minutes south of Ubud by car) rather than the Ubud Palace — the clifftop setting, the 200-strong male chorus, and the sunset over the Indian Ocean make it one of Bali's greatest theatrical and spiritual experiences. • Private driver day hire is the most efficient way to reach Mount Batur, the Tirta Empul holy spring, the Goa Gajah elephant cave, and the Tegalalang rice fields in a single day — negotiate the day rate directly at your hotel for approximately £35–50. • The Ubud Traditional Art Market (Pasar Seni) on the main street opens at dawn and the first hour (06:00–07:00) before tourist prices harden offers the most authentic and affordable local craft buying experience. • Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary: wear close-toed shoes, do not carry visible food or shiny objects (the monkeys are opportunistic thieves), and do not approach mother monkeys with infants. Entry is approximately £4 per adult.

Best time to visit Ubud
April – October
Ubud's highland climate is significantly cooler and wetter than coastal Bali — generally 24–31°C with notable evening cooling (sometimes down to 20°C). The dry season (April to September/October) is the best time to visit — clear days, manageable humidity, and the terraced rice fields at their most photogenic. The wet season (November to March) brings heavy afternoon and overnight rain; mornings are often beautiful, but the landscape is muddier and some activities are disrupted. The UK school summer holidays (July–August) fall in the dry season, making this a popular time — slightly more crowded but the best weather.
Getting there
Ubud is reached via Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS/Denpasar), Bali's main airport, served from London via Singapore (Singapore Airlines), Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific), Dubai (Emirates), and Doha (Qatar Airways) — total journey time approximately 15–17 hours. There are no direct UK–Bali flights. From Denpasar Airport, Ubud is approximately 35km north — approximately 1.5–2 hours by car depending on traffic, which is significant around Seminyak and Kuta. Arrange a private driver transfer in advance (around £10–15 via the hotel or apps such as BlueBird); metered taxis are not available in Ubud itself.
