Lisbon's biggest street party, when June's Santo António festivities fill the old quarters with grilled sardines, music and all-night revelry.
<p>Every June, Lisbon throws itself into <strong>Festas de Lisboa</strong>, a month-long citywide celebration honouring Saint Anthony, the city's patron. This is Lisbon at its most joyous and authentic: the old neighbourhoods of Alfama, Mouraria and Graça are strung with paper lanterns and bunting, and the smell of grilled sardines drifts down every cobbled lane. If you want to see how Lisboetas really party, plan your trip around it.</p><h3>What to expect</h3><p>The peak is the night of 12–13 June, the feast of Santo António, when the whole city stays up eating <em>sardinhas assadas</em>, drinking, and dancing at makeshift street parties (<em>arraiais</em>). Earlier, the grand Marchas Populares parade sends costumed neighbourhood troupes dancing down Avenida da Liberdade in fierce, friendly competition. Basil pots (manjericos) with little love poems are the traditional gift of the season.</p><p>Practical tips. The Alfama and Mouraria arraiais are the liveliest but also the most crowded, so go early evening to claim a spot, then let the night unfold. Wear comfortable shoes for the steep, uneven cobbles, and carry cash for the food and drink stalls. It gets busy and boisterous, so keep valuables secure, pace yourself, and simply follow the music and grill-smoke to the best corners.</p>

Where it happens
How to get there
Fly into Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), about 7 km from the centre. The Metro Red Line runs from the airport; change to the Green or Blue lines for the historic core. For the Alfama and Mouraria festivities, ride to Baixa-Chiado or Santa Apolónia, or take historic Tram 28 up through the old quarters. From the airport a taxi or rideshare reaches the centre in 15–20 minutes. During the June celebrations, expect street closures and packed transport at night, so plan to walk between the arraiais and wear shoes for the steep cobbles.
