The Bahamas' spectacular street parade — crepe-paper costumes, goatskin drums, cowbells and brass, from before dawn on Bay Street.

Junkanoo is the national festival of The Bahamas and the loudest, brightest night of the year. Rooted in the West African masquerade traditions carried across by enslaved people, it erupts on Bay Street in downtown Nassau in the small hours of Boxing Day (26 December) and again on New Year's Day, running from around 1am until well after sunrise.

Rival 'shacks' — organised groups who spend the whole year building their costumes in secret — parade in towering, sculptural crepe-paper creations, driven by a rush-out of goatskin drums, clanging cowbells, whistles and brass. Prizes are awarded for costume, music and overall presentation, and the rivalry is fierce. Grandstand seats on Bay Street are sold in advance; the free standing sections fill early. Smaller Junkanoo parades take place on Grand Bahama and several Family Islands, and a version rushes out in George Town, Exuma, in early January.
