▸ About this event

The Netherlands turns orange for the King's birthday, with canal-boat parties, a citywide street market and nonstop music on 27 April.

King's Day (Koningsdag) is the Netherlands' biggest and most exuberant national holiday, marking the birthday of King Willem-Alexander on 27 April. Nowhere celebrates harder than Amsterdam, where the entire city turns orange and dissolves into one enormous street party. Canals fill with boats packed with revellers, music blares from every corner, and the whole population seems to spill onto the streets dressed in the national colour.

A defining feature is the vrijmarkt, the citywide free market where anyone can sell anything from the pavement. Amsterdam becomes a vast open-air flea market, with families laying out blankets of secondhand treasures and children busking for coins. Add DJ stages, live bands, packed cafe terraces and a flotilla of decorated boats on the canals, and you have a joyous, chaotic and unmistakably Dutch day.

How to do it well

Wear orange, or you will feel out of place, and go early, as the crowds swell through the morning and the centre becomes very busy by afternoon. Cash is handy for the vrijmarkt stalls, and comfortable shoes are essential given how much you will walk; trams and roads in the centre are largely shut, so getting around means going on foot. If canal-boat crowds and dense throngs are not your thing, residential neighbourhoods like the Jordaan offer a gentler, more local version of the festivities. Book accommodation months ahead, as rooms vanish and prices soar around the holiday.

▸ Getting there

How to get there

Fly into Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), about 15 km southwest of the city. Frequent trains run from the airport straight to Amsterdam Centraal in around 15-20 minutes. King's Day takes over the whole city, with the canal belt, the Jordaan and Vondelpark among the focal points, and it is best explored on foot amid the free-market crowds along the canals. On 27 April trams and roads in the centre are heavily restricted or closed, so plan to walk. Wear orange to blend in, and expect packed platforms all day.
