Shakespeare's sparky comedy of wit and mistaken love, staged in the open air at the reconstructed Globe on London's Bankside — groundling tickets a steal.

Few theatrical experiences match seeing Shakespeare at Shakespeare's Globe, the faithful reconstruction of the original open-air playhouse on the south bank of the Thames. Much Ado About Nothing is one of his most crowd-pleasing comedies, all sparring wit between Beatrice and Benedick, misunderstandings and eventual romance, and it comes alive in this timber-framed, thatched theatre where the audience surrounds the stage on three sides under the open sky. For visitors it's a chance to experience Shakespeare much as Elizabethan Londoners did, right down to standing in the yard as a groundling.

The Globe thrives on its connection between players and crowd. Actors work the whole space, banter lands directly on the audience, and live music, dancing and the buzz of a packed yard give the comedy real momentum. Because it's open-air and largely daylight or dusk-lit, there's an infectious, communal energy quite unlike a hushed indoor theatre.

Tips for going

The cheapest and most atmospheric option is a standing groundling ticket in the yard, though you'll be on your feet for the whole show, so wear comfortable shoes. Seated gallery tickets come with the option to hire a cushion and a backrest. It rains in London, so bring a poncho rather than an umbrella, which is not allowed as it blocks views. Performances run through summer into autumn and popular dates sell out, so book ahead.
