▸ About this event

The world's largest carnival, where samba schools compete in dazzling all-night parades through Rio's purpose-built Sambadrome.

Rio de Janeiro's Carnival is the world's largest pre-Lenten celebration. In 2027 the main festivities run February 5-9, climaxing with the Grupo Especial samba-school competition at the Sambadrome on the nights of February 7, 8 and 9. Twelve elite schools parade elaborate floats, drum sections and thousands of costumed dancers before judges. Street 'blocos' fill neighbourhoods citywide, and the winning schools return for the Champions' Parade on February 13.

How to get there

Rio Carnival's headline parades take place at the Sambódromo (Sambadrome) in central Rio de Janeiro. International flights land at Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport (GIG); domestic hops use Santos Dumont (SDU). From Galeão, a taxi or ride-hail into the centre takes around 30-40 minutes. The nearest metro stop to the Sambadrome is Praça Onze on Metro Line 1, a short walk from the sectors; Central station also serves it. The metro runs extended overnight hours during Carnival — by far the safest and simplest way to reach and leave the parades late at night.
