Seville's dazzling spring fair: a week of flamenco dresses, horse-drawn carriages, sherry and dancing in hundreds of striped marquees.

The Feria de Abril is Seville at its most joyously theatrical, a week-long explosion of Andalusian culture held a couple of weeks after Easter. A vast fairground in the Los Remedios district fills with over a thousand casetas (marquees), strung with paper lanterns, where families and friends eat, drink sherry and dance from afternoon deep into the night.

By day, the spectacle is the paseo: women in ruffled flamenco dresses and men in traditional riding gear parade on horseback and in beautifully turned-out carriages down the sandy avenues. By night, the fairground blazes with light, the guitars come out, and the whole city seems to be dancing sevillanas. There is a funfair for children, endless tapas, and an atmosphere of pure, generous celebration. It is one of Spain's most colourful festivals and worth timing a trip around.

Tips for your visit

Note that many casetas are private, run by families, clubs or businesses; a handful are public, so enjoy the parade, food stalls and funfair freely, and go with a local contact if you hope to enter a private tent. Dress up if you can, come hungry, and pace the sherry. Book accommodation months ahead, as the city fills. Evenings are the liveliest, and lunchtime the classic hour for the horse-and-carriage promenade.

Where it happens
How to get there
Fly into Seville Airport (SVQ), around 10 km northeast; the EA airport bus runs to the centre in roughly 35 minutes. The Feria takes place on the Real de la Feria fairground in the Los Remedios district, across the Guadalquivir river from the old town. There is no metro stop at the gate, but Seville's Metro Line 1 and the tram serve the centre, from where it is a walk or short taxi across the river. During fair week expect road closures and heavy demand for taxis, so allow extra time and consider walking from the centre.
