A soaring organ recital under the dome of Budapest's grandest basilica, often paired with a panorama-terrace view across the city's rooftops.

St Stephen's Basilica (Szent István-bazilika) is Budapest's largest church and one of its defining landmarks, crowned by a dome that rises to the same height as the Parliament building. These summer concerts fill that vast neo-Renaissance interior with the sound of the basilica's organ, sometimes joined by trumpet, soprano or a small ensemble, and many tickets add access to the dome's panorama terrace.

Inside, the acoustics are cavernous and enveloping; bass notes seem to rise up through the marble floor while gilded mosaics glint overhead. Programmes lean on crowd-pleasers, from Bach and Handel to Ave Maria settings and Hungarian favourites, making it an accessible, atmospheric hour even if classical concerts are not usually your thing. Climb to the terrace and the reward is a 360-degree sweep over Pest's rooftops toward the Danube and the Buda hills.

Tips for your visit

Book online in advance for summer dates and better seats, as the central nave fills first. If your ticket includes the terrace, go up before the concert in daylight or stay for golden-hour views; there is a lift as well as stairs. Arrive 20 minutes early, dress modestly as it is a working church, and keep phones silent during the performance.

Where it happens
How to get there
Fly into Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), about 16 km southeast of the centre; the 100E Airport Express bus runs straight to Deák Ferenc tér in roughly 40 minutes. The basilica stands in central Pest, a 5-minute walk from Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út station on the M1 and M3 metro lines, and close to Arany János utca (M3) and Deák Ferenc tér, the hub where M1, M2 and M3 meet. From Deák it is a short, flat stroll up toward Szent István tér. The surrounding streets are pedestrian-friendly, so the metro is far easier than driving.
