▸ About this event

Vivaldi's Four Seasons performed live in Prague's candlelit baroque halls and churches — a summer-long feast of virtuoso strings in one of Europe's prettiest cities.

Prague spends its summer awash in music, and no piece is more beloved here than Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. Across the warmer months, chamber ensembles and small orchestras perform the concertos almost nightly in the city's gilded baroque halls, historic churches and mirrored salons, often paired with Bach, Pachelbel's Canon or a little Mozart. For travellers it's a rare chance to hear this endlessly familiar music the way it was meant to be experienced: live, close-up, and under the frescoed ceilings and chandeliers of the very era that produced it.

The appeal is as much atmospheric as musical. Venues such as the Baroque halls near the Old Town, riverside churches and 18th-century mirror rooms seat only a few hundred, so you're never far from the soloist's flying bow. Expect a tight, expressive string ensemble, a charismatic lead violinist tackling the storms and birdsong of each season, and warm applause in an intimate room rather than a vast concert hall.

Tips for going

Concerts run frequently through the summer, so you can usually find one on almost any evening, but the best-known venues sell out in peak weeks, so book a day or two ahead. Programmes vary, so check that the full Four Seasons is on the bill rather than a mixed highlights set. Arrive 20 minutes early for a good seat, as many venues have open seating, and dress smart-casual. Evenings can be warm inside these old halls, so bring water.

How to get there

Prague's Václav Havel Airport (PRG) lies about 15 km west of the centre. There's no direct metro to the airport, so take bus 119 to Nádraží Veleslavín and change to metro line A (green), which runs into the historic core; Staroměstská and Můstek are the handiest stops for Old Town venues, roughly 40 to 50 minutes door to door. A taxi or airport transfer takes around 30 minutes. Most concert venues cluster around the Old Town Square and Charles Bridge, all walkable once you're in the centre, though the cobbled lanes can be busy in the evenings.
