A folded limestone range along the Swiss border, gentler than the Alps and far quieter. The Jura invented the reculée — a blind valley ending in a cliff amphitheatre — and Baume-les-Messieurs is the textbook example. It makes comté in village fruitières and vin jaune at Château-Chalon, aged six years under a veil of yeast in barrels nobody tops up. In winter it is France's cross-country country: the Transjurassienne is a 68 km race and the GTJ trail runs the length of the range. The Saline Royale at Arc-et-Senans is Ledoux's unfinished utopian factory town, listed by UNESCO.
