Križna Cave (Križna jama)

<p>Križna Cave is the quiet counterweight to Postojna: no train, no concrete, no crowds — a boat, a lamp and a guide. The cave is around 8.8 kilometres long and its river has ponded into a famous chain of 22 lakes (45 if the smallest pools are counted), separated by pale calcite dams and coloured a startling green-blue by the clean water. Longer tours push deep into the system by boat, lifting the craft over each dam in turn; the short tour reaches the first lakes and is enough to show what makes it special.</p><p>Near the entrance is one of the richest cave-bear sites in Europe. Excavations here — most spectacularly in 1887 — turned up the remains of more than a hundred <em>Ursus spelaeus</em>, with thousands of bones tens of thousands of years old, and skulls are still displayed where they lie. Numbers are strictly limited to protect the water and the formations, so the deep tours must be booked well in advance.</p><p><strong>Planning your visit.</strong> Everything here is guided and booked — nothing is walk-in. The short tour with a boat ride on the first lake runs about an hour; adding the bear tunnel makes it 1.5–2 hours; the water tour to Kalvarija is 3.5–4 hours and the full run to Crystal Mountain 6.5–7. Numbers are strictly capped to protect the water and the formations, and the deep tours are booked out far in advance — the longest has been quoting dates years ahead. Reserve as early as you can, and treat even the short visit as a fixed half-day anchor given the drive in.</p>
