Ljubljana Old Town & Prešeren Square

A car-free riverside capital of baroque façades and Plečnik's bridges — small enough to cross on foot, and built around café tables on the Ljubljanica.

About Ljubljana Old Town & Prešeren Square

Ljubljana is a capital city the size of a large town, and its centre has been closed to cars for years, which is the first thing visitors notice: the loudest sound on the Ljubljanica embankments is conversation. Prešeren Square is the hinge of it, with the pink Franciscan church on one side and the poet France Prešeren's statue looking across at the relief of his unrequited love, Julija, in a window opposite.

From the square, Jože Plečnik's Triple Bridge fans across the river into the baroque Old Town beneath the castle hill. Plečnik reshaped his home city between the wars with a coherence few architects ever manage — the bridges, the market colonnade, the National and University Library, the embankments themselves — and in 2021 those works were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Add the riverside market, the dragon-guarded bridge downstream and a dense café culture, and two days go quickly.
