Škocjan Caves

<p>If Postojna is the crowd-pleaser, Škocjan is the one that stops people mid-sentence. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986 as Slovenia's first natural site to be listed, it protects the point where the Reka river vanishes underground and carves one of the largest known subterranean canyons in the world. The path runs along a ledge cut into the canyon wall with the river roaring in the dark below, and crosses the Cerkvenik Bridge some 47 metres above the water — an experience closer to walking a mountain gorge than touring a cave.</p><p>The Martel Chamber, at roughly 146 metres high, 120 metres wide and 300 metres long, is among the largest discovered underground chambers in Europe. Above ground the park takes in collapse dolines, the old stone villages of Škocjan and Matavun, and walking trails over the plateau; the wider area is protected as a Ramsar wetland and as the Karst and Reka River Basin Biosphere Reserve. It is the great set-piece of the Classical Karst.</p><p><strong>Planning your visit.</strong> Access is by guided tour only, on fixed timed departures, and this is the long one — reckon on two and a half to three hours underground and afoot, plus the 600 m walk down from the ticket office to the entrance. Book ahead: departures are limited, especially outside high summer when there may be only three or four a day. Photography is not permitted inside, and the cave sits at 12°C. Given the length and the fixed slot, Škocjan is a half-day in itself — build the day around your departure time rather than hoping to slot it between other stops.</p>
