Triglav National Park

<p>Triglav National Park is the only national park in Slovenia and it is a big one, covering most of the Julian Alps and something over four per cent of the country. Within its boundary are Lake Bohinj, the Vrata and Trenta valleys, the source of the Soča, the Savica waterfall, the Tolmin gorges at its lowest point and Mount Triglav itself at the centre. Its origins go back to a protected area first established in the Triglav Lakes valley in 1924, which makes it one of the older parks in Europe.</p><p>Practically it is a walking park: a dense network of marked paths and mountain huts, from valley strolls to multi-day traverses of the high limestone. Ibex and chamois are on the crags, golden eagles overhead, and the alpine meadows are famous for their flowers in early summer. The Vršič pass road, hairpinning over the range, is the classic drive through it.</p>
