The resort
Altayskiye Alpy is a modest ski base in the Ulba valley of East Kazakhstan, set among the taiga forests and ridges of the Altai near the mining towns of Ridder and Ust-Kamenogorsk (Oskemen). This is very much a Kazakh Altai resort, and the Altai is Kazakhstan's snowiest corner, fed by Siberian weather systems. The hill itself is low in altitude and gentle in character, beloved locally as a family and beginner-friendly base, though its natural snow and quiet, tree-lined slopes also draw powder-seekers and ski-tourers. It is far from any major city, so the atmosphere is peaceful and unhurried, easily combined with snowshoeing and eco-travel in the surrounding West Altai reserve.

How to get there
The nearest airport is Ust-Kamenogorsk (Oskemen, UKK) in East Kazakhstan, far closer than Almaty; from there it is a road journey out to the resort.
A drive of a couple of hours from Ust-Kamenogorsk through the Ulba valley reaches the base.
Best time: December through March, when Altai snowfall is at its most abundant.
