How to get there
Grenoble (GNB) is the nearest packet gateway, with Lyon and Chambéry also serving the Maurienne; the final approach climbs the valley from the Arc corridor and the Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne turn-off up to the resorts.
The TGV network reaches Saint-Michel-Valloire in the Maurienne valley, from where a short transfer by bus or taxi completes the climb to the villages.
The final leg is a scenic mountain road with a series of hairpins up from the valley floor; it is straightforward in good conditions but can be slow after heavy snow.
Best time: January to March offers the most reliable cold and cover, with late-season March cruising rewarding those who like sunny corn snow.
