Après & vibe
Evenings are quiet and Nordic, centred on cabins, saunas and the resort's own restaurant rather than nightlife.
The resort
Ukkohalla is a small, welcoming ski resort rising as a lone fell above Hyrynsalmi in the forested Kainuu region of central-eastern Finland. The downhill runs are short, gentle and floodlit, classic Finnish fell skiing built for families, children and cruisers rather than steep thrills, while an extensive network of cross-country trails threads out through the surrounding taiga. Set well to the north, it enjoys a long, cold season and dark winter skies that make it a fine place to catch the aurora. The mood is quiet, cosy and self-contained, a lakeside cabin-and-sauna holiday as much as a ski trip.

Skiing & terrain
Gentle fell slopes and learner lifts are ideal for children and first-timers.
Easy, floodlit cruisers make up most of the downhill terrain.
A steeper pitch or two provides limited challenge.
Little lift-served expert terrain; the appeal lies in cross-country and touring instead.
Cross-country through the taiga
Ukkohalla's extensive groomed Nordic trails wind out into the surrounding Kainuu forests and around frozen lakes.
Aurora nights
Its far-northern setting and dark skies make it a rewarding spot to watch the northern lights on clear evenings.
